Documents required for a learner's licence test
Updated 2026-10-31 · Unofficial guide · Always confirm details with gov.za / your DLTC
To apply for a learner's licence you generally need a valid South African ID (or passport and permit for foreigners), ID photos, proof of residential address and to pass an eye test. Exact requirements can vary by DLTC.
Checklist
- Green bar-coded ID book or Smart ID card (foreign nationals: passport and valid permit / residence documents)
- ID photographs — many DLTCs take them on site
- Proof of residential address (confirm with your centre)
- Completed application form (form LL1), usually available at the DLTC
- Fee payment
Eye test
You must pass an eyesight test. Bring your glasses or contacts if you use them — your licence may then be endorsed accordingly.
Minimum age
gov.za states 17 or older for a light motor vehicle learner's licence (Code 2), 16 or older for a motorcycle up to 125 cc (18 above 125 cc), and 18 for heavy vehicles. Confirm on gov.za.
