Learner's licence codes 1, 2 and 3 explained
Updated 2026-10-31 · Unofficial guide · Always confirm details with gov.za / your DLTC
South African learner's licences come in three codes: Code 1 (motorcycles), Code 2 (light motor vehicles such as cars — leads to a Code B/EB, often called 'Code 8') and Code 3 (heavy motor vehicles — leads to Code C1/C/EC, e.g. 'Code 10' and 'Code 14').
The three codes
| Learner's code | Vehicle | Typical driving licence afterwards |
|---|---|---|
| Code 1 | Motorcycle | A1 / A |
| Code 2 | Light motor vehicle (car, bakkie) | B / EB ("Code 8") |
| Code 3 | Heavy motor vehicle | C1 / C / EC ("Code 10", "Code 14") |
Which should I choose?
Most people want to drive a car, so they book Code 2. The rules and signs content is largely shared; controls differ by code.
