K53 vehicle controls section explained

Updated 2026-10-31 · Unofficial guide · Always confirm details with gov.za / your DLTC

The vehicle controls section asks which control you use for a task — e.g. clutch, accelerator, brake, indicator, hooter. It is short (commonly 8 questions, 6 to pass) so every mistake counts.

What it covers

Identifying controls by number on a diagram and choosing which to use when moving off, stopping, changing gear, signalling or warning other road users.

Different per code

Code 1 (motorcycle) uses handlebar controls such as the front brake lever and clutch lever; Code 2 (light vehicle) uses a car dashboard; Code 3 (heavy vehicle) adds controls such as the exhaust brake or air brakes. Practise the code you are booking.

Why people fail it

Few questions mean little room for error. Learn the diagram for your code thoroughly. Figures below are commonly published for the learner's test; confirm the current format at your DLTC or on official sites before your test.
