The rules of the road section tests the National Road Traffic Act and Regulations — speed limits, right of way, overtaking, following distance, alcohol limits and what learner drivers may and may not do.
General speed limits
- 60 km/h on public roads in an urban area
- 100 km/h on public roads outside urban areas (other than freeways)
- 120 km/h on freeways
Lower limits can apply to certain vehicles, and signs override general limits.
Alcohol
The legal blood alcohol limit is under 0.05 g per 100 ml for ordinary drivers and under 0.02 g per 100 ml for professional drivers (check current law — changes have been proposed).
Following distance
K53 teaches at least a two-second following distance in good conditions, more in rain or at night.
Learner driver rules
A learner must be accompanied by someone holding a licence for that vehicle class, seated beside them (for cars). Learners may not carry passengers on a motorcycle.
Right of way and four-way stops
At a four-way stop the vehicle that arrives first goes first. Yield to pedestrians on crossings.
